Austin is a music city that happens to have an art scene — or at least that's the reputation. The reality in 2026 is more interesting.
## The Blanton
The Blanton Museum of Art, the largest university art museum in the country, is having a big summer. "American Modernism from the Charles Butt Collection" brings Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ellsworth Kelly, Jacob Lawrence, and Alma Thomas under one roof.
"Run the Code: Data-Driven Art Decoded" is a collaboration with the Thoma Foundation — Refik Anadol, teamLab, Jenny Holzer, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, and Leo Villareal contribute works where algorithms interpret data as sensory art.
## The Contemporary Austin
The Contemporary Austin runs the Jones Center downtown and the sculpture park at Laguna Gloria. Laura Lit's museum debut at Laguna Gloria runs through January 2027. Sable Elyse Smith's "Clockwork" closes August 2.
## East Austin
Ivester Contemporary inside the Canopy complex has two concurrent shows. grayDUCK Gallery on Cesar Chavez is a century-old house hosting monthly shows, poetry, and performances. Flatbed Press is a working printmaking studio with original prints from $200.
Austin's art scene has accessibility and authenticity — spaces run by artists, for artists, barrier to entry low.
